Layout #5

Here is layout #5. These are pictures from when Haley was first born. I liked that we remembered to take a picture with our nurse and physician that was there when Haley was born. I think it will be neat when she is older to show her who was there when she was born!

Book Review: The Big Picture

The Big Picture
By: Stacy Julian

Stacy Julian's book The Big Picture gave me a whole new outlook on scrapbooking. I have learned that it's okay if pictures are not scrapped right away and not every layout has to be about an event. It's important to scrapbook personalities and emotions. Stacy has a Library of Memories and describes her system in the book.

Chapter: Pages
There are 50 pages of layouts featured in the book. Stacy tells you the why, where, and what for each layout. Why she created the layout, where it is kept in her Library of Memories, and what went on behind the scenes to create the page. This section is great because not only do you learn new ways to organize your scrapbooks but you also get lots of layout ideas.

Chapter: Projects
The projects section give lots of ideas for other theme albums to create. One of my favorites from the book is "Mom According To..." Stacy interviewed her 4 boys and asked them questions related to herself. She asked each boy the same set of questions to get their perspective of her. She had at least 2 pages for each boy. One featured pictures and the other had all the answers to the questions. Super cute idea. Stacy even gives you the list of questions that she asked her boys. What a great gift idea for grandparents. There are pages and pages of ideas. This section also tells you the why, where, and what for each project.

Chapter 3: Other Stuff
The last chapter is all about planning. Chapter 3 helps you to identify what motivates you to scrapbook, what approach you take, and what do you want to get out of scrapbooking. Stacy than reviews her Library of Memories system. I'm really excited to create my own Library of Memories. I have some layouts that I really had no idea what album to put them in. But this book gave me a new perspective. What is so great about the Library of Memories is that it is very adaptable to whatever works for you.

The final part of the book Stacy talks about creativity and inspiration. She shares a resource list of books and websites that have inspired her and shares what she liked about each item.

My Thoughts:
What I really like about The Big Picture is that Stacy gets you to really think about what story you want to tell through your scrapbooks. That it isn't about how many layouts you have done or how far behind you (there is no such thing according Stacy's system). It's telling your story and scrapbooking the moments and people that are important to you.

I would definitely recommend this book for fellow scrapbookers!!

Layout #3

Here is a digital layout that I did for Haley's trip to Sesame Street Live! She had so much fun. She just loves Elmo. She took her friend Ava with her. I am going to make this one a hybrid page. I want to add the title and date with some fun letters and embellishments. I am going to go ahead and post this one towards my goal because I want to have more digital pages done before I print to help save on paying for shipping on each one.

I think the page will be more appealing once I get the title on to spruce it up a bit. I got the idea from the Paper + Pixels book. That is one of the lessons in their book: Making a Collage. If you haven't already, check out the book review below. I purchased the template from http://www.designerdigitals.com/. It was created by Anna Aspnes.

Layout #2

I know it seems like I am moving a little slow but I am getting some layouts done. I actually have a couple of more done but I need to take their pictures still so I will get them posted as soon as I can.

Here is a layout I did with my Daughter and my Husband on his first Father's Day. Haley was only a month old. I told you I have a lot of catching up to do. I wanted the layout to be simple and not too frilly. I thought it turned out perfect. I of course just have to add some journaling. As you all know I always put that off. It is my least favorite part.

Products used: Cardstock, Ribbon from All My Memories, Alphaletterz from Provo Craft, Paper from SEI

Book Review: Paper + Pixels Scrapbook Layouts

If you are thinking about digital scrapbooking but not sure what it's all about or where to start you should give hybrid scrapbooking a try. It's the best of both worlds. Paper + Pixels is by May Flaum and Audrey Neal. They walk you thru some digital scrapbooking one step at a time. The book starts off by going through some of the basics of what you need and how to get organized before you start digital scrapbooking. It covers such things as definitions and the differences between traditional, digitial, and hybrid scrapbooking; organization and how to store your digital supplies; and of course a review of the basics of 2 common programs used with digital scrapbooking: Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop Elements.

The second part of the book is the lessons. Each lesson topic is divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced. With each new lesson there is a box that states the program being used, the new technique, and the skills you need (which are previous lessons taught). Page numbers are listed with the skills you need as a reference so you do not have to go searching thru the book for a refresher.

Part 1: Photograghs
Lesson 1: Editing Photos
Lesson 2: Changing Color and Opacity
Lesson 3: Creating Photo Collages
Lesson 4: Adding Brushes, Frames, and Photo Masks
Lesson 5: Extracting Photos

Part2: Text
Lesson 1: Creating White Text
Lesson 2: Layering Text
Lesson 3: Creating Decorative Text
Lesson 4: Adding Text to Brushes
Lesson 5: Adding Effects to Text

Part 3: Paper
Lesson 1: Altering Digital Paper
Lesson 2: Mixing Digital Papers
Lesson 3: Using Brushes and Filters
Lesson 4: Creating Paper with Text and Shapes
Lesson 5: Altering Photos

Part 4: Embellishments
Lesson 1: Using Digital Embellishments
Lesson 2: Making Brushes
Lesson 3: Using Autoshapes
Lesson 4: Combining Images and Custom Shapes
Lesson 5: Putting It All Together

Gallery of Ideas:
The Gallery of Ideas has over 20 hybrid layouts for inspiration from various designers.

There is a CD ROM that comes with the book. On the CD is 12 digital scrapbook kits all from different designers. This way if you are new to digital scrapbooking you have some supplies you can start working with to see if digital scrapbooking is something you would be interested in.

The last part of the book is the source list. This list mentions every company referenced in the book along with their contact information and website.

Visit www.amazon.com to purchase.

In my opinion I think this book is perfect for someone like me who has no clue what she is doing with digital scrapbooking. Since Adobe Photoshop Elements (the program I use) has no manual or instructions what so ever, I need as much help as I can get. This book will definitely be a resource for me as I continue my path to learning how to digitally scrapbook.

If you have read this book or used it, I would love to have your comments on what you thought!

New Contest!

**Contest is now closed; To make it fair to everyone I can not accept any more dates. Please visit often as I am planning to have more contests soon!!!

Okay so since I am so far behind on getting my scrapbooks done I have come up with a new sort of contest. Not only do I have Haley's scrapbook to work on but I have vacation and wedding photos waiting patiently to be off the computer and into their own scrapbook. I am the kind of person that works best under pressure. I tend to put things off to the last minute. So here is what I was thinking I would do for the new contest:

I have placed the calendar below. All you have to do is pick a date that you think I will have completed 100 scrapbook pages. The person who chooses the date closest to when I finish will win a prize (to be determined). Sounds pretty easy right?

I will place a ticker on the blog that will keep track of how many pages that I have completed. I will also post a picture of each layout that I complete.

Rules:
1. You can only choose one date.
2. Only one person per date.
3. Scroll over the calendar to pick your date to make sure that no one else has choosen it.
4. Pick any date over the next year.
5. Email memoriestoscrap@hotmail.com or post a comment with your date.
6. Be sure to invite scrapbooking friends to participate.

I hope I am up to the challenge.

New Layout!

Here is a new layout I did. The paper is from American Traditional Designs: Welcome Baby Quilt, Blue Cardstock; the chipboard number is from BasicGrey: Numberpile Undressed. I covered the number and distressed it with a nailfile. I also distressed the paper that I mounted it on. I used a label maker for the word "month" and than inked it to make the letters stand out. I got a $9 label maker from Walmart. I love it. Instead of using the tape that comes with it my mom and I use wallpaper. We cut it to the width that it needs to be and roll it up so that the label maker prints the letters on the back. This way we can use whatever color ink we want to go with our projects that we are working on. Its great to make any phrase or word that you need.

Sorry the picture is dark. It has been rainy here! Not much natural light to work with!
