Sixteen-year-thoughtful Jamie lives with his mother, Elizabeth, and two younger brothers, Alex and Nicholas, in a saddle-cloth trust home in Adelaide's north suburbs. Their home is but person of many sun-starved houses crammed in the same time to cater for a disenfranchised company. Jamie longs for an escape from the ravishment and hopelessness that surrounds him and his salvation arrives in the form of John, a charismatic work~ who unexpectedly comes to his minister to. As John spends more and more time with Jamie's family, Elizabeth and her boys arise to experience a stability and reason of family that they have not ever known. John moves from the role of Jamie's protector to that of a mentor, indoctrinating Jamie into his cosmos, a world brimming with bigotry, faithfulness and malice. Like a son mimicking his male parent, Jamie soon begins to take in successi~ some of John's traits and beliefs similar to he spends more and more time with him and his select group of friends. The guard and guidance that John presents to Jamie is initially welcomed in whatever manner as events occur around him, including the disappearance of several people, Jamie begins to harbour astute suspicions about John and his motivations. When the verity is finally revealed to Jamie his hopes of merriment are threatened by both his faithfulness for, and fear of, his ascribe to a ~-figure John Bunting, Australia's greatest number notorious serial killer.
